I then did the tonearm re-wire which helped tremendously - until a month later I decided to go all-in and just get the SME 309 tonearm. Changed the mat to acrylic and found a little bump in sound, nothing crazy though. If you’re unfamiliar with the material, look into it - works great (as far as my limited experience can tell). Then the feet, replaced with cheap but thick sorbothane pads. I’m using a red body on a bronze stylus - I know they’re a little different, but the improvements were immediate and evident. I had an Ortofon 2M Red and got a good deal on a bronze stylus replacement. Because I want to see what is possible - and because I have a weird attachment to the Technics sl1200 - I decided to stick with it and see how deep I can go with the technics on-hand.
